NEWPORT-The wait was finally over on Wednesday for the family of Faron Waldrop, whose body was sought for a month by search teams in Douglas Lake after his car was discovered on the Interstate 40 Bridge in February. Waldrop's body was discovered at about 11 a.m. on Wednesday by a fisherman near the Indian Creek encampment of Douglas Lake, and authorities from Jefferson County and Cocke County, as well as Tennessee Valley Authority police, responded to the scene to confirm the finding.
Rescue squads from several nearby counties began searching in February after a car driven by Waldrop, 38, 2470 Denton Road, Cosby, was found on the bridge with its engine running and Waldrop's wallet on the seat, and squad volunteers continued to search the waters near the bridge for several days without results. Cocke County Sheriff's Department Det.
Derrick Wood said Wednesday he and Jefferson County Sheriff's Department Chief Detective Bud McCoig and Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Agent Mike Hannon took a boat to the location, about two miles downstream, where the body was found. Jefferson County Sheriff David Davenport said he does not believe there is any evidence of foul play involved in Waldrop's death, but that an autopsy will likely be conducted as standard procedure in such cases.
Rowena Waldrop, mother of the victim, said Thursday, "We're so glad they found him-it was so hard. It was all fresh again." Rowena and her husband, Frank Waldrop, raised their son, who lived with them at 2470 Denton Road for the past 37 years. He would have been 38 in August. The victim also had a sister, Tina Cardenas. "He was such a good boy.
You wouldn't believe the concern. Everybody has been so nice," said Rowena Waldrop. "He was a precious one-lived for the Lord and read his Bible. I know he was saved," she said. "He loved to go out and meet people."
The family believes Faron suffered brain injuries from a motorcycle wreck he had on River Road when he was about 22 years old. He became disabled and was cared for by his parents.
The funeral is expected to be at Brown Funeral Home with visitation on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. and the service beginning at 8 p.m. Burial is planned for Saturday at 11 a.m. at McMillan Cemetery.
