Larry Ross Payne, Sr. was born January 25, 1936 and passed away on June 23, 2007. He was born to Earl and Susie Hutsell Payne in a mountain home in Spicewood near Walland, TN. He loved the Smokies and especially Cades Cove where the Payne and Shields families raised their children before the Park Service moved the early settlers out. He also loved listening and singing Blue Grass and Country music. The song playing as he took his last earthly breath was him singing “Sweet Chariot.” What a wonderful blessing for his family. He graduated from Walland High School in 1955. He served in the Army from 1955 to 1964. He retired from PACCAR and ConAgra where he worked as a Systems Manager and Materials Manager. He was a member of the Nine Mile Masonic Lodge No. 49, and OES of Lansing, KS, where he served as Worshipful Master of the lodge and helped build the new building. He was preceded in death by his parents: Earl and Susie Payne; and brother: Venard. He is survived by the mother of his children and special caregiver: Mary Payne; daughters and sons-in-law: Pamela and Tom Cooley, Valerie and James Tavares, and Angela and Mark Aurilio; son: Larry Payne, Jr.; granddaughters: Janelle and Darrian Payne, Whitney Tavares, and Briana, Alexandra and Emmalee Aurilio; brothers and sisters: Doris and Carl Corby, Margie and Delmar Raines, Dolly Moore, Rowena Cummings, Judy and Larry Spradlin, Kenneth and Judith Payne, Johnny and Donna Payne, Jackie and Dorothy Payne, Diane and Darell Huskey, Kathy and Mike Norton, David and Mindy Payne, and Connie Payne; aunt: Mary Clyde Carver; many nephews and nieces; and special friends: Earl Blair, Velda and Marshall Powell, Earl Reed, and special ex-brother-in-law: Bobby Davis. A Masonic Funeral Rite will be 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, 2007 at Memorial Funeral Home. Funeral service will follow with Rev. Ray Couey officiating. Everyone meet 10:00 a.m. Wednesday June 27 for a graveside service at Laws Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday June 26 at the funeral home.
