HAMMER, GLEE OLA DUGGAN - age 82, died on July 25, 2011, at her residence in Knoxville, surrounded by her loving family and countless friends who were blessed by her creative energy, compassion, and southern charm. Glee was born on January 2, 1929, in Knoxville, TN, and was the daughter of Helen Montgomery Duggan and William E. Duggan. She attended Central High School and the University of Tennessee. She met and married Ben Lee Hammer in 1946 when she was the lead singer of a local swing band and he the rhythm guitarist. Glee and Ben moved to Oak Ridge with their growing family in the mid 50's, where Ben went to work for Union Carbide. Upon Ben's retirement, the couple moved to the Outer Banks area, where they enjoyed many years of happiness exploring the coastal regions. After her husband's death in 1996, Glee returned to Knoxville. During her early life, she studied singing and performed locally as a lyric soprano, appearing on local radio. She was one of the first announcers for WUOT and appeared as a commentator on the "WUOT 60th Anniversary Broadcast." She had a lifelong love of theatre, music and opera, contributing time and talent to the Oak Ridge Playhouse; the Boot Straps Actors Group, Angler's Cove Dinner Theater and the Edenton Little Theater in North Carolina. Glee is survived by all ten of her children, fourteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Her children include Teresa Hammer Wells of Clinton; Stephen David Hammer and wife, Frances, of Belvidere, NC; Stephanie Diane Hammer and husband, Charles West, of Knoxville; Deborah Hammer Johnson and husband, Roger, of Oak Ridge; Rosemary Hammer Hyde and husband, Billy, of Clinton; Lisa Alice Hammer of Knoxville; Benjamin Joseph Hammer and wife, Carol, of Edenton, NC; Anne-Marie Hammer of Knoxville; John William Hammer, and wife, Sandy, of Clinton; and Peter Michael Hammer, and wife, Teresa, of Heiskell. Grandchildren include Matthew Monday and wife, Hassie, of Clinton; Jennifer Cumbie Gentry and husband, Jon, of Knoxville; Jason Hyde and wife, Sara Wieland, of Knoxville; Ben Johnson and wife, Kathleen, of Madison, Wisconsin; Stephanie Hammer Burnside and husband, Chris, of Raleigh, NC; Rebecca Hyde Hethcote and husband, Justin, of Nashville; Martha Hammer of Greensboro, NC; Anna Orion West-Hammer of Knoxville; Robert Hammer of Oliver Springs; Emily Hammer of Virginia Beach, VA; Angie Quinn of Maynardville; Joshua Quinn of Clinton; Emma Hammer of Oak Ridge; and Meghan Hammer of Powell. Before her death, Glee became the great grandmother of Finley Christopher Owen Hyde, child of Jason Hyde and Sara Wieland, and said that she had finally become a "great." She has a second great grandchild due in September to granddaughter Rebecca and her husband Justin Hethcote. Glee is survived by her sister, Gail Duncan, and husband, Jerry Duncan of Farragut and nieces Misty Mayes and Marcy Riley, and nephew Stephen Duncan and their families. She is also survived by a second sister, Lynn Barnes and family, of Seymour, TN. She is preceded in death by a brother, Lacey Barnes, Jr. The family wishes to express thanks to the very caring staff of Caris Hospice whose kindness and compassion will always be in our hearts. The family will receive friends who want to celebrate Glee's life at Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel of Berry Funeral Home on 2300 W.
