Reuben J. Spence age 91 of Cosby went to be with his Lord Friday February 24, 2006 at Park West Medical Center in Knoxville. He was a builder and a member of Denton Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and a Trustee for over 50 years. Reuben served in WWII in the United States Army in the South Pacific campaigns where Mr. Spence was wounded. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl (Jenkins) Spence; parents, George and Ollie (Bishop) Spence; one son, Dr. Donald L. Spence; one sister and five brothers also preceded him in death, Pauline Johnson, Floyd Spence, Hugh Spence, Clay Spence, Herman Spence and Wilbur Spence. Mr. Spence is survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law and one foster daughter, Joan and Harold Cates of Newport, Ellen Hodges of Waynesville, Sue and Ron Fox of Maryville, Bobbi and Tim Marion of Cosby and Jean and Jerry Forner of Newport; one brother, Mack Spence of Graham, NC; one sister, Genevieve Spence of Cosby; eight grandchildren, Dr. Harold E. Cates Jr, Whitney and Stacy Hodges, Jennifer Cunningham, Ronnie Fox, Jake Marion, Shayna Holt, and Shea Childers; ten great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews and a host of special friends. The family will receive friends Sunday February 26, 2006 from 6-8 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home. Funeral service will follow at 8 p.m. with Rev. Gene Watkins officiating. Graveside service will be conducted Monday February 27, 2006 at 11 a.m. with D.A.V. officiating military rites at Union Cemetery. Brown Funeral Home has been honored to provide the final arrangements for Mr. Reuben J. Spence.
