Burgin, Eugene W., age 80, of South Knoxville went to be with the Lord January 6, 2009 at Park West Medical Center. He was a member of Sevier Heights Baptist Church. He graduated from Young High School Class of 1947 and attended the University of Tennessee on a football scholarship under Coach Robert Neyland. He served in the military where he played football for the overseas army team and was selected for both offensive and defensive all-star teams. On returning to Knoxville he began working for the Knoxville Journal as district manager and attended and played football for Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, TN. His career in automobile sales began as owner of Parkway Motor Sales on Chapman Highway and in 1967 became the owner of Burgin Dodge, Inc. In his 36 years as a Dodge Dealer he received every award for excellence offered by the Chrysler Corporation, and was recognized as #1 in the nation for customer service in the Dodge Division. He retired in 2003. He is preceded in death by his father Freeman H. Burgin and mother Neva Cutshaw Burgin.
Survivors
Survived by wife of 58 years, Betty Jo Ogle Burgin, son Stephen (Deacon) Burgin, daughters and son in laws Sherry Rhoton and Dale Rhoton and Sandy and David Houston, grandchildren Rebecca Day and husband Brian, Tyler Rhoton and wife Emily, Ryan Burgin and wife Christie, Jeremy Burgin, Josh Burgin and wife Meredith, Elizabeth Claybaker and husband Ben, Jonathan Houston and wife Kristy, Rachel Austin and husband Aaron, and Gabriel Houston (deceased), as well as 10 great-grandchildren, brothers and in laws Jay and Margaret Burgin, Darrahl and Jerry Burgin, Homer Burgin and many nieces and nephews.
Service
Funeral services will be held Friday, January 9, 2009 at Sevier Heights Baptist Church at 7:30pm with Pastors David Houston, Hollie Miller and Tim Miller officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Sevier Heights Baptist Church, 3232 Alcoa Hwy., Knoxville, TN 37920 or Alzheimer’s Association, 2200 Sutherland Avenue, Knoxville, TN 37919. Friends will meet at the entrance of Woodlawn Cemetery at 10:45 am Saturday for an 11:00am interment service. The family will receive friends from 4:30pm to 7:30pm Friday prior to the service at Sevier Heights Baptist Church. All of his grandsons will be pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be the Young High School Class of 1947 and special friend, John Lockridge.
