Hope for Today, a support group for cancer patients and their families, is raising money next Saturday for their care one frying pan at a time.
Frying pans, blenders, coats, dresses, shoes, pictures, rugs, baby items, antiques, handmade crafts — all will be part of the organization's rummage sale to be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 14 at the old East Maryville Baptist Church parking lot on Brown School Road. The rain date is Oct. 21.
Executive Director Charlene Walker, who founded the group in June 1998, said they have collected a storage building full of donated items for the sale and are working on a second. All of the proceeds from the event will go toward helping cancer patients and their families right here in Blount County. Some need gas for transportation or food or medications. Others simply need help paying utility bills or other housing costs. Walker said Hope for Today is here to step in and help out.
A non-profit organization with 501 (C) 3 status, Hope for Today received a $15,000 grant from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Knoxville affiliate. Walker said $10,000 of that is designated for helping women with breast cancer, a project they are calling Project HOPE — Helping Oncology Patients Endure.
The proceeds from this first yard sale next Saturday will go toward care for survivors of other types of cancer.
Kim Henderson, 44, and her family have experienced the generosity of Hope for Today firsthand. A breast cancer survivor who is currently undergoing radiation treatments for cancer that has surfaced on her skin and a spot on her breast, said it has meant everything to her.
"They have done a lot for me," she said. She attended several of the Hope for Today support group meetings until she became too weak to go. She met Walker at a cancer survival day about five years ago. They have remained good friends ever since.
Henderson, who lives in Friendsville, has undergone a mastectomy, reconstruction surgery, two brain surgeries, numerous chemotherapy treatments as well as radiation and now suffers from seizures. She remains in the fight and said people like Walker and those in Hope for Today provide her with the support and prayers that will get her through.
In April, Hope for Today held a fund-raiser and raised $14,000. It is being used to fund Project CARE — Caring Assistance and Relief for Emergencies. Walker said thanks to the generosity of others, there are a lot of needs out there her organization will be able to help. Project HOPE and Project CARE funds are designated for cancer survivors with no insurance and low income.
Attendance at the monthly Hope for Today support groups averages 80, Walker said. About 50 percent of those are cancer survivors. A total of 19 people have been helped since June, Walker said, with $5,600 allocated.
Walker puts out a monthly newsletter, outlining upcoming meetings and special events. A prayer request list goes hand in hand with it. The verses in Romans 12: 12-13, offer the message Walker wants Hope for Today to convey she said: "Joyful in hope, sharing with God's people in need."
Walker herself is a cancer survivor. She started Hope for Today right after she began her first chemotherapy treatments.
Her organization received its non-profit status in 2005.
Hope for Today cancer support group meets at 7 p.m. the first Monday of each month at Piney Grove Baptist Church.
