Ronald Blazer is seeking his 3rd term as Highway Commissioner in the 2nd District. He is married to Linda Blazer, they have one daughter, Christie Ramsey, married to Jarrett "Willie" Ramsey, two grandchildren, Jarrett Jr. and Abigail Ramsey. He is the son of the late Estel and Edith Blazer of Parrottsville. Blazer is a Viet Nam Vet, with a total of nine years in the armed forces. He served two years from 1969-71 in the active Army and seven years with the 278th of Newport from 1990 to 1997. "It has been an honor and privilege to represent the citizens of the 2nd district," Blazer said. "Because of the blessing of the good Lord, I have been able to attend every meeting for the past eight years. I feel I have a good working relationship with the other Commissioners and the Highway Superintendent. "Due to the dedication and hard work of our Highway Department, our roads have been much improved," he continued. "We have sought and received grants and other monies, such as water shed programs, bridge programs where our employees do the work that makes the department extra funds. With these funds we have been able to buy much needed machinery and equipment." Blazer said that major decisions lie just ahead. "Right now we are considering buying an asphalt plant. I think this would be a good move for our county considering the number of roads that need resurfacing. "As your commissioner I have always tried to address every concern that has been brought before me," Blazer continued. "If I am elected for the next four years I will try diligently to improve the roads in the 2nd district and also work for the betterment of our whole county. I have worked for the Cocke County school system for the past 28 years as a bus driver so I know the conditions the roads can get in. "There is still a lot of improvement that needs to be made. If I don't see you before the August 3rd election, I humbly ask for your vote and support. May God bless each and everyone of you and our great country."

NEWPORT-During a short meeting of the Cocke County Highway Commission on Tuesday, Commissioner Ronald Blazer volunteered to serve on the county's purchasing committee, along with Cocke County Road Commissioner John Holloway. Commissioners then voted unanimously to approve Blazer to sit on the committee. In other business on Tuesday, the board discussed speed limit recommendations on Greasy Cove Road and Hartford Road. Commissioner Danny Fish asked board members whether they understood why a request formally made to the Cocke County Legislative Body to place a speed limit sign of 40 miles per hour on Hartford Road had not been approved. The board noted that other speed limit sign requests had been granted, but that, for some reason, the Hartford Road request had not been approved. Fish then made a motion to resubmit the request to the CLB, and commissioner Kenny Hall seconded the motion, after which the board voted unanimously to do so. The next regular meeting of the Cocke County Highway Commission will be held on Nov. 14 at 5:30 p.m. at the Cocke County Highway Department, located off Lower Quarry Road.

Blazer seeks re-election to highway commission
Ronald Blazer has announced his bid for re-election as highway commissioner in the Second District for the Aug. 5 election.
Blazer has 100 percent attendance during his 12 years on the commission
"It has been an honor and privilege to represent the 2nd District for the past 12 years," he said. "It is by the grace of God I've been able to attend every meeting for the past 12 years. I have always believed if you take a position, it is your duty to represent that position to the best of your ability.
"Progress has been made but much more could be made. I feel that our county should have its own asphalt plant. With this, I believe, we will be able to blacktop more roads, with less expense. Also, we will be able to lay down matting instead of shoveling the holes full. I will work on this in this term.
"Again, I thank you for the honor and privilege to represent the 2nd District.
"I humbly ask for your complimentary vote and may God bless."
