COSBY-Two local women were tragically killed in a three-vehicle collision on State Highway 321 near the Foothills Parkway entrance on Friday. Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Claude Strange reported that Carrie B. Norrell, 33, of Chavis Road, Cosby, and Eliza K. Coggins, 47, of 4266 Black Mountain Road, Hartford, both died from injuries suffered in the accident.
"A 1990 Chevrolet Scottsdale pickup, driven by Andrew K. Rolen, 28, of 1570 Rolen Way, Sevierville, was northbound on State Highway 321 when the driver lost control of his vehicle in a curve, dropped off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected sending the vehicle back across the roadway sideswiping a 1998 Honda CRV, driven by Calvin H. Stickler, 77, of 9681 Woodland View Lane, Cordova," said Strange.
Strange said after sideswiping the Honda, Rolen's vehicle then collided head-on with a 1993 Ford Taurus, driven by Samantha O. Henry, 18, of 151 Columbia Way, Parrottsville, which was southbound, as was Stickler's vehicle. "The Stickler's, Calvin and Sadie, suffered no injuries in the accident," said Strange.
Strange reported that Rolen and his passenger, Norrell, were both ejected from Rolen's vehicle, as it rolled over onto its side on the highway because they weren't wearing seatbelts.
"Seatbelts could have definitely made a difference and might have saved the girl's life," said Strange.
Strange said Rolen suffered critical injury after being ejected and was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center (UTMC) in Knoxville by Lifestar Medical Helicopter.
According to a UTMC representative, Rolen was listed in stable condition at press time on Saturday.
Strange said there were three other people in Henry's vehicle including Coggins, who suffered fatal injuries in the accident and died.
"Samantha Henry suffered critical injuries breaking both her hands and legs and had to be extricated from the vehicle by the Cosby Volunteer Fire Department, who used the 'Jaws of Life' to cut her free," said Strange. "She was then flown by Lifestar Medical Helicopter to the University of Tennessee Medical Center." According to UTMC, Henry was listed in serious condition at press time on Saturday.
Strange said Henry's other two passenger's Wesley Linkes, 43, of 4266 Black Mountain Road, Hartford, and Henry's son, Elijah J. Henry, 1, of 151 Columbia Way, Parrottsville, both suffered minor injury and were transported by Allied Emergency Medical Service to Baptist Hospital of Cocke County, where they were both treated and released.
"Everyone in the both the Stickler and Henry vehicles were wearing seatbelt and the child was properly restrained in his car seat," said Strange. The accident took place about 2:30 in the afternoon and Strange said alcohol may have been a contributing factor in this tragedy, as it was found in the Rolen's vehicle.
Strange said after the investigation is complete, charges will be pending against Rolen.
THP Sgt. Danny Talley also assisted Strange at the accident scene, along with the Cocke County Sheriff's Department.
According to a Tennessee Uniform Citation report issued by Cocke County Sheriff's Department Deputy Timothy Snapp, Andrew Kelly Rolen was issued a traffic citation for speeding, as he was doing 39 miles per hour in a 15 MPH school zone in front of Cosby School on November 1 at 7:40 a.m. and he is scheduled to appear in General Sessions Court on Monday, Dec. 19 on this charge.
