The Plain Talk obituary after the Oct. 29 death of Anderson Strange, 69, brought back a lot of memories of my friend, “Beetle” Strange, who had suffered with lung cancer for several years. He and his wife, Lillie Mae (Owens) Strange, finally closed their famous Beetle’s Broasted Chicken roadside restaurant last year because of his declining health.
Today, Nov. 6, they would have celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary. I called Lillie on Friday after thinking about Beetle and his career in the restaurant business. Most of you have enjoyed his cooking and chicken during the past 40 or 50 years. Old timers will recall the 1950s at the Newport Restaurant operated by Earl Pelfrey, who went on to operate several facilities in the area. Beetle started as a dishwasher and met Lizzie, a schoolgirl, who worked as a waitress in 1952. He soon was a short-order cook and finally head chef. Lillie would go to work after school and bring her books to study before the restaurant closed and Beetle would take her home. After marrying in 1955, they had two children. You know Debbie Carlisle, who is a nurse for the state, and Rev. Dennis Strange, pastor of Mannings Chapel Church. Pelfrey bought the Broasted Chick at the “Three Way”–highways 25E and 25/70–and later sold it to Beetle in 1967. He and Lizzie operated it until 1980 and that’s the place I recall enjoying many delicious Sunday chicken dinners and those homemade pies for which they were famous. The state needed to widen 25E and that forced the Stranges to sell. For a time they worked at Baneberry until he opened his small kitchen in what was “Pap” Clevenger’s store off 25/70 near Reidtown. All of us probably picked up a box or bag of chicken and fried taters with coleslaw on the way to the lake. His weekend hobby became a big business but the Stranges always remained humble folks with lots of friends.
In plain talk, I will always remember Beetle Strange’s smile and, yes, the aroma of broasted chicken, when traveling towards the setting sun.
