Birth: 1917
Death: Apr. 3, 2006
Long-time Chicago Ridge resident, devoted wife, mother and grandmother, died suddenly April 3, 2006 at the age of 88 at Advocate Christ Hospital, in Oak Lawn. Visitation will be held Friday, April 7 from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Schmaedeke Funeral Home, 10701 S. Harlem Ave., Worth. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 8 in the funeral home, followed by interment at Chapel Hill Gardens South Cemetery in Worth. John and Harriett Oudsteyn met at a Halloween party and were married on Jan. 14, 1939. The Oudsteyn's celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on January 14. The couple's love and devotion to each other has always been an inspiration to their family and friends. The Oudsteyn's moved to Chicago Ridge in about 1950, when there were only about 600 residents, and assisted with the start of the Chicago Ridge Fire Department in the 1950's. For 14 years, fire calls were answered from the large black telephone on the wall of her kitchen with a button next to the phone to turn on the siren and one to shut it off. She was one of the founding members of the Chicago Ridge Firemen's Association Ladies Auxiliary and was active with both the local and state organizations. She worked for the Chicago Ridge Police Department for 35 years and retired in 2002 after serving as the secretary for four different police chiefs. Mrs. Oudsteyn was an avid sports fan. She would watch any sport whether it was professional or college and was a tremendous fan of the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Bears. One of Mrs. Oudsteyn's first jobs was in the concession stand at Wrigley Field right behind home plate, which made the majority of her family Cubs fans even though they lived on the South Side. She also traveled extensively with her husband, both around the country in a motor home and around the world. Her family was extremely important to her and she insisted on celebrating each birthday with a small family party even though the youngest grandchild is in his late 20's. When her grandchildren married, the additions to the family were not considered "spouses" but became additional grandchildren for her, expanding the number of grandchildren she had from three to five. Survivors include her husband John, daughter Harriett Lynn (Michael) Welch; son John (Nancy) Oudsteyn; her grandchildren John and Jennifer Oudsteyn, Gina and Thomas Kenny and Brian Oudsteyn; her sister-in-law Ruth Sorgenfry; her spoiled dog Kalo and a soon to be great-grandson.
