Gene Layman, prominent Newport businessman and former City Recorder, dies suddenly
Author: Duay O'Neil
NEWPORT-Prominent Newport businessman Gene Layman died Saturday morning after a short illness.
According to a family member, Layman, 70, co-owner of Cocke County Wholesale, became ill after returning home from work on Wednesday afternoon and was taken by his wife to Baptist Hospital of Cocke County's emergency room.
After being transferred to a Knoxville hospital, Layman rallied and, for a time, doctors thought he would make a complete recovery from his apparent stroke. However, Layman then suffered a heart attack.
Born November 11, 1939 in Newport at the family home on White Oak Avenue, Layman was a son of the late Garland and Estie (Finchum) Layman.
He graduated from Cocke County High School in 1959 where he excelled as #63 on the school's football team. He was also President of the CCHS Class of 1959 and recently enjoyed the class's 50-year reunion where he greeted members of the "59's," many of whom are still active in Newport.
The next year he married his high school sweetheart Nancy Rader, daughter of Jack and Dorothy Mooneyham Rader on March 21, 1960 and the couple celebrated their Golden Anniversary this past spring with a gala party.
At the time of his marriage, Layman was serving in the United States Navy and was on board the USS Nitro for a Mediterranean tour.
Upon his discharge from the service in 1961, he began working at Helm Lumber Company. He was later associated with Combine Insurance Company and the Newport Fire Department.
Then he worked at the Newport Plain Talk as advertising manager. He left this newspaper in 1970 to serve in the same position at the newly-established Cocke County Banner.
In 1973 he was elected Newport's City Recorder and served in this capacity for ten years. During this time he opened Cocke County Wholesale.
In 1978 he also open La Skadisc, a skating rink which became a popular hangout for Cocke County's youth.
Other business partnerships included L&M Mobile Home Park, Swimming Pool, and Go Cart Track and the Delaney Expedition Show and Circus.
Throughout the 1960s-70s, he rarely missed a Fighting Cocks football game and later became the "Number One" fan of the Cocke County High School Volleyball Team when his granddaughter Tracie joined the team.
Throughout his life he was a well-known advocate for Cocke County's youth.
He was also a strong supporter of the Republican Party.
Survivors include his wife and two sons, Todd Eugene Laymand and Tim Corland Layman, and granddaughter Tracie Lynn Layman.
Funeral services for Layman were held Monday, June 7, at First Baptist Church. Entombment was this morning at Union Cemetery, Newport.
Manes Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
