MARY HEATON, born September 20, 1925 in Birmingham, AL, daughter of the late William Harry and Margaret Kroeger Heaton of Ooltewah, TN. Her father, being in the transportation field, she lived, during her early years, in Birmingham, Chattanooga, Atlanta and Knoxville. Graduated from Central High, Knoxville, class of 1942 and later attended Carson-Newman College. Married to husband of 60 years, Dr. Lee Newman. She attended business school in Memphis and held positions in the insurance and publication industry. During her husband’s career with the Naval Medical service, she was involved in little theatre productions in California, Florida and overseas in Japan. She also had several hundred hours in volunteer counseling with the Navy Relief Society. For this, she received a commendation from Commanding General, Camp Pendleton Marine Base for her outstanding service. Active in teaching and nursery director at First Presbyterian Church, Knoxville. She served as President of the auxiliary to the Tennessee Optometric Association and worked in her husband’s optometic practice as office manager until retirement in 1992. Survivors She is survived by husband, Dr. Lee Newman; daughter and son-in-law, Kristy Anita and Don Rochat; granddaughter and husband, Emilee and Michael Dockery; great-grandson, Jared Dockery. Service Funeral services will be conducted 8:00 pm Wednesday at Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel with Rev. Vernon Holstad and Dr. Robert Ferguson officiating. The family and friends will meet at Tennessee Veterans Cemetery 11:30 am Thursday for interment services. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church, 9132 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37923.
