- [S24] The Newport Plain Talk, (http://www.newportplaintalk.com), 24 Jul 2005.
Before we move along with other wanderings, last week we dropped by to see Charlie Williams, a 93-year-old barber. Another fellow cutting hair is J. W. Dorsey off Cosby Hwy. We¡¦ll pay him a visit soon. ¡§I guess at one time there were 25 shops in Newport,¡¨ said Williams. He and Edsel Hall recalled that Bruce Roberts was a well-known barber who cut young Bill Myers¡¦ hair. C. D. Fisher, former sheriff, visited the shop every day. A name you might have heard from the past is that of Bruce Wilson, who worked with Roberts. You may soon hear more from barbers¡Vat least those still alive.
When I saw the senior couple at the front desk renewing their Plain Talk subscription with receptionist Penny Webb, it didn¡¦t take long to find out that we had met years ago. Although Arlie Allen is a Jefferson Co. native, he is well known to Cocke Countians for his 40 years work at Bush Brothers cannery in Chestnut Hill. He worked in the maintenance department. Years ago, I had met his new wife, Betty. A fire at her late husband¡¦s and her property destroyed a mobilehome. She is the former Betty Dunn Nichols, of 1640 Hannon Road. You may have known her late parents, Allen and Georgia Mae Dunn. Sister Wanda Sims died recently, but Betty has another sister, Claudette Shults of Judd¡¦s Lane. Arlie, who will turn 84 on Valentine¡¦s Day, is the father of Rhonda Smallwood, of Newport, and Alda (Mrs. Jim) Roberts, of Dayton, Tenn. Jim hails from Waterville, NC. But, how is it Arlie ended up in Newport? His first wife died in 1996 and he happened to be eating breakfast at Newport Hardee¡¦s. One morning, folks from the local senior citizens center invited him to visit. He half jokingly asked if he might find a woman there. And that¡¦s where he met Betty. They honeymooned in Spain in 2000.
