Funeral services will be held today for Clarence Edgar ( Bobe ) Story Jr ., a former Alcoa fire chief and purchasing agent, who died Wednesday at his home. He was 81.
Story started as a firefighter in 1962, then became fire chief in 1967, according to current Alcoa Fire Chief Roger Robinson.
"While he was chief, he played a big part in taking us from a volunteer fire department into a career department," Robinson said of Story . "He believed in a lot of training, getting firefighters through the state academy, and appointed Clifford Freeman as the first fire inspector."
Robinson said he and Jim Whaley, deputy fire chief, both joined the department as volunteers under Story , and later were promoted to full-time firemen in 1979.
"I try to keep some things going that he got started," Robinson said.
Under Story 's leadership, the department fought many major fires, including two at Midland shopping center in 1965 and 1977, and when Springbrook School burned in 1967.
Robinson said Story opened a second fire station and increased the number of personnel from 6 to 23.
Story became purchasing agent for Alcoa in 1979, Robinson said.
Story was also a football and baseball star at Walland High School and won letters in football, baseball and track at Maryville College.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at West Millers Cove Missionary Baptist Church in Walland followed by interment in the church cemetery.
