U.S. Veteran James Edwin Bryant, age 88, of Newport, passed away Saturday, December 6, 2008 at his home. Mr. Bryant retired from the U. S. Postal Service, a member of English Creek Baptist Church, and a former member of the Cosby Ruritan Club. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in WWII, member of the VFW. He was also a Mason and member of Newport Masonic Lodge # 234 F&AM. He was preceded in death by his parents, Landon and Texie Bryant; and sister, Ila Mae Hall. He is survived by his wife Betty H. Bryant; daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Foster Chason, Donna and Randy Cureton all of Newport. Funeral services will be held 8:00 pm Sunday, December 7, 2008 in Manes Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Alvin Watts officiating. Burial will be 11:00 am, Monday, December 8, 2008 in Union Cemetery, with L/Cpl Charles C. Roberts DAV Chapter 102 conducting military rites. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Sunday, December 7, 2008 at Manes Funeral Home prior to the funeral services. The family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Ken Johnson and his staff at Newport Internal Medicine, Smoky Mountain Home Health and Hospice, and his caregivers, Barbara Crum, Sally Allende, Vera Norton and Angel Yates.
