If you travel along Hwy. 25E, and it's a good time to do so because the high lake waters look so inviting, you passed Cutshaw's TV shop.
On Wednesday I dropped in on Gene and Betty Cutshaw to congratulate them on 23 years in business. Son, Tommy Cutshaw, was repainting their sign. Most of the time you will see him working at Mountainview Truck stop. Gene had just returned from getting some medical tests. Betty was back repairing TVs and the shop is full. At 65, she still enjoys the work and has no plans to retire.
Gene, 67, has already been retired and both take to the lake to fish. Days ago they caught 11 stripped bass in two days not far from Walters Bridge. Their other sons are Joe, who lives near Savannah, and does construction, and Steve, a Berkline employee. Steve also has his mother's interest in electronics but specializes on VCRs, and DVD players. Betty was a Blazer whose parents were the former Judy Hartsell, who lives in Northport, and the late Guy Blazer. Gene's parents, preacher Roy Cutshaw and Ruth (Griffin) Cutshaw are deceased.
Some of you will remember Betty from her work at Parks Belk, Stokely Shults Drug Store and later for years at Magnavox. This is where she learned electronics but the plant shut down about 1978. By 1983, she was ready to open her own shop with the construction help of the family. Some of you will know Gene's brothers and sisters: Jack, who works with Paul Freeman at Freeman's Furniture; Harold, a retired railroad man; and Brenda Wilson, who works at White Foods. Betty said the recent strong storms and lightning brought her several TVs that got damaged. She can fix them. However, she is seeing flat screen TVs-the new era-but she can't and won't work on these. When the old TVs disappear, she will call it quits.
