Helen Stephens turns 90
NEWPORT-Helen Stephens will celebrate her 90th birthday on Monday, June 7. Her family surprised her with a party on Friday, June 4, at Baptist Convalescent Center where she is a resident.
Helen is the widow of Joe S. Stephens, who retired from Teague Chevrolet (formerly Myers Chevrolet) after 38 years of service. He passed away in August of 1999, having been married to Helen for 59 years at the time of his death.
Helen was a substitute teacher at Newport Grammar School where she was also a member of the PTA. She was also an avid basketball fan of the NGS Warriors and CCHS basketball team and attended all the Big Red football games. She was a big fan of the CCHS marching band and took part in all fundraising events.
Helen's parents were Fred and Mary (Carter) Patton of Greeneville. Of the family's five daughters, she is the only surviving child.
Helen has two daughters, Sandra (Kenneth) Calfee and Anne (Wayne) Freeman, all of Newport. She is the proud grandmother of Andy (Jennifer) Calfee of Dandridge, Leigh Anne (Brett) Kickliter of Parrottsville, and Adam Freeman of Newport.
She has four great-grandchildren-Jackson Calfee, Kate Kickliter, Loretta Kickliter, and Tori Hoover, and one great-great-grandchild Carson Hoover.

Helen L. Stephens age 91 of Newport passed away Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at Baptist Convalescent Center. She was a member of Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church. She was a substitute teacher at Newport Grammar School for many years and was a member of the PTA. She was also an avid basketball fan of the NGS Warriors and CCHS basketball and football teams. She was an avid supporter of all sports at Cocke County High School in the 60’s and 70’s, especially the Big Red Marching Band. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe S. Stephens; parents Fred and Mary (Carter) Patton and four sisters. She is survived by her daughters, Sandra (Kenneth) Calfee of Newport and Anne (Wayne) Freeman of Newport; grandchildren Andy (Jennifer) Calfee of Dandridge, Leigh Anne (Brett) Kickliter of Parrottsville and Adam Freeman of Newport; great-grandchildren, Jackson Calfee, Kate Kickliter, Loretta Kickliter, Abe Kickliter and Tori Hoover; great-great-grandson, Carson Hoover and several nieces, nephews and other family and friends. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am Friday, July 22, 2011 at Manes Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Glen Bradley officiating. Burial will be at in Union Cemetery.
