Gladys Trentham Russell Yeaton age 92 of Maryville died July 16, 2009 at her home. She was a native of the Sugarlands area in the Smoky Mountains National Park, and was well known as the author of three regional books: Call Me Hillbilly, It Happened in The Smokies, and Smoky Mountain Family Album. She was a graduate of Lincoln Memorial University, and taught school in Blount County until her retirement in 1979. She taught at Lanier, Everett, and Heritage High Schools. She was a member of Madison Avenue Baptist Church, where she served as church librarian for thirty years. She was preceded in death by: Her Husband of 54 years, Samuel H. Russell and her second husband, Horace "Whitey" Yeaton; Parents, Noah & Mary Jane Trentham; Brothers, Wesley Carr, Orlie, Mack, Willie, Munsey, and Harmon Trentham; Sisters, Lillie, Ollie and Mayme Trentham, and Kate Stogner. Survivors include: Daughter & Son-in-law, Sandra & Benny P'Pool; Son & Daughter-in-law, Rev. Terry & Linda Russell all of Maryville; Grandchildren, Amy (Brad) Kastendick and Kevin (Kristi) Russell of Fort Smith, AR; Grandson, Brent Russell of Maryville; Great-Grandchildren, Alex & Jack Kastendick, and Logan & Ava Russell of Arkansas; Sister, Bonnie T. Myers of Maryville; Brother, Sam E. Trentham of Louisville; many nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Morning View Village for the wonderful care they provided Gladys for the past two years. Blount County author, teacher Gladys Russell Yeaton, dead at 92

Gladys Trentham Russell Yeaton, well-known author and longtime English teacher, died Thursday at her home. She was 92.
While growing up, Yeaton and her 11 siblings lived on a 163-acre farm in the area known as Forks of the River near the Sugarlands area in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The family moved to Pigeon Forge in 1933, according to her sister, Bonnie Trentham Myers, of Maryville.
"I was 12, and she would have been about 16 or 17," Myers said. "We raised everything you can think of except okra. We had a spring and no electricity until we moved." Myers said her sister's memory was "really great" about life in the Smokies.
"When it came to telling stories, she was always right there and she told a lot of stories," she said.
From those memories, Yeaton authored three regional books, "Call Me Hillbilly," "It Happened in The Smokies," and "Smoky Mountain Family Album." Myers said once her sister wrote her first book, people started talking about it and encouraged her to write the others.
A graduate of Lincoln Memorial University, Yeaton taught at Lanier, Everett and Heritage high schools in Blount County until her retirement in 1979. She was also church librarian for 30 years at Madison Avenue Baptist Church, where she was member.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at Smith Chapel with interment at 11 a.m. Monday at Grandview Cemetery.
