Joseph Coleman Beretta was honored with a ceremony at First Baptist Church Thursday evening, as he earned the Boy Scouts of America rank of Eagle.
According to Scout Troop 298, Beretta designed and carried out his Eagle project, which involved creating a low-maintenance "hardscape" for the exterior of the First Baptist Church Mission House, located on Mims Avenue. The project involved the removal of unsightly shrubbery, rerouting the guttering from the house, and using river rocks to landscape.
As a Boy Scout, Beretta earned a total of 24 merit badges including 12 specific "Eagle-required" badges that are necessary to advance in rank. Those badges include citizenship, personal management, physical fitness, first aid and emergency preparedness. He also earned merit badges for Aviation, Basketry, Fingerprinting, Geology, Leatherwork, Metalwork, Motor Boating, Pioneering, Rowing, Whitewater, Wilderness Survival, and Wood Carving.
Contributing over 100 volunteer hours during his Boy Scout tenure, Beretta has participated in community service projects involving litter pick-up, food collections, improvements to storage shelving at the Bread Basket, landscaping projects at Carson Springs Conference Center, Newport Grammar School, and the Newport Animal Shelter.
