NEWPORT—Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, Aug. 30, for one of Cocke County's oldest citizens.
Rhea Barker died Friday, Aug. 28, 2015, at Newport Health and Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness. She would have turned 103 years old on Sept. 16.
Born in neighboring Sevier County's community of Boyd's Creek in 1912, she was one of eight children of George and Hettie (White) Parton and their last surviving child.
Her siblings were sisters Ethel Parton Rogers and Velma Parton Clabo, and her brothers were Arnold, Adam, Dallas, and Plez Parton.
At her 100th birthday celebration, she said her father was a farmer who was noted for making excellent molasses.
She married a neighbor boy, Beecher Barker, and they had one daughter, Johnnie.
Her husband's job with the State of Tennessee brought the family to Newport about 65 years ago.
They first resided in the Irish Cut community where they became loyal members of Lowe's Chapel Freewill Baptist Church and sang in a quartet, providing special music at numerous religious gatherings and funerals.
Later they moved to a home on Lincoln Avenue. Following her husband's death, Barker continued to reside here until well into her 90s, before moving to Wellington Place Assisted Living.
Barker worked at the old White Store for eight years as a cashier and later served as manager of the Cocke County High School cafeteria for many years.
Her only child died in 2005, as did her son-in-law.
Her immediate survivors include a granddaughter, Shelia Moss Massey and husband Ron, a great-granddaughter Dr. Lauren Massey Larkey and husband Will, and two great-great-grandchildren Ben and Caroline Larkey, all of Newnan, Georgia.
Manes Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements.
