LOIS LACROIX BARBER , a longtime Greenwich resident, economist, wife, mother, and sailor, died Tuesdy, August 25, 2009. Born February 24, 1921 in Ann Arbor, Mich., she graduated from Northwestern University with phi beta kappa and served as research economist in Chicago. In 1941, she sailed to Hawaii to enforce price regulations from the Office of Price Administration (OPA). After the war, she sailed to Oxford, England, to marry Rhodes Scholar, Charles Barber , who had courted her in Hawaii. She raised their four children in Greenwich, where she enjoyed sailing and swimming. Later, she taught Norwegian Elkhounds to be champion. In addition, she continued her education at Columbia Teacher's College, where she earned her Masters of Teaching. She worked with students in the local schools. After the children left home, Mrs. Barber enjoyed traveling with her husband to such countries as Peru, Mexico, and Australia, where they visited mines in remote areas. Mrs. Barber was committed to community activities, such as Meals on Wheels and the League of Women Voters Education Fund. She also worked at the United Nations to improve the status of women worldwide. There, she was instrumental in creating a permanent library dedicated to this work. When Mrs. Barber 's 95 year old mother moved into her house, she included her mother in this work for the next seven years. She helped her mother find a voice in the community through a book club, football games for Michigan alumni, and church activities. Every year the two of them attended the annual family picnic in Ann Arbor, Mich., where the family has gathered for 150 years. This year, Mrs. Barber received prizes for being the oldest in attendance and for having traveled the farthest to the annual family picnic. Mrs. Barber is survived by her husband of 62 years, Charles Barber , and her four children, Brad Barber of Boston, Ann Barber of New York City, Robin Barber of Boston, and Betsy Siegler in Pennsylvania. The Memorial Service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Greenwich Friday, August 28, 2009 at 2 p.m. Afterwards, the reception will be held at the Belle Haven Club, Glenwood Drive, Greenwich.
