January 15, 1928 - February 12, 2018
Willie Bruce “Wib” Ogle, age 90, returned to his heavenly home on Monday, February 12, 2018 after a valiant battle with a long illness. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in God supported him in his struggle and ultimately gave him peace. Wib will be remembered by his family and friends as a pillar of strength in his family, his community and his church and a man who lived his life with honor and faith.
Wib was a lifelong resident of Gatlinburg, Tennessee and a member and deacon of the Laurel Grove Primitive Baptist Church. He spent the early years of his career in law enforcement serving as Chief of Police in the Gatlinburg Police Department and served his community as Mayor. He was a participant in local civic organizations and was a longstanding member of American Legion Post #202. He and his wife were the owners and operators of Ogle's Custom Carpet in Gatlinburg for over 40 years before his retirement in 2010.
He was a veteran of World War II in the U.S. Navy and was an All-Navy Welterweight Boxing Champion. He loved the sport of boxing and competed in the Golden Gloves Welterweight Division. After competing, he continued his love of the sport by coaching young men in the local community.
He is preceded in death by his parents Oscar E. and Mertie R, Ogle; brothers Milton Ogle and Oscar Ogle Jr.(June); his sisters, Blanche Wilkins, Grace McCarter, and Alizie “Bunt” McCarter; and his precious granddaughter, Stephanie Shular, daughter-in-law; Debbie Ogle.
Wib is survived by his loving wife of 68 years Perna Smith Ogle; his son and daughter in law, Rocky Don and Vicki Ogle, his son, Terry Bruce Ogle; his daughter Joy Shular Phillips; his grandchildren Todd Shular, Rocky Ogle, Shell Wood, Derrick Ogle, Cori Owenby and Beth Turner; his great grandchildren, Brody Wood, Brystol Wood, Cameron Owenby and Jayden Ogle; and his sister Margaret Mantooth, his sister-in-law Laura Ogle and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Wib’s memory be made to Alzhemier’s Tennessee, 5801 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919.
The family will receive friends from 12-1:45 PM Thursday in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with funeral service to follow at 2 PM with Elder Ralph Smith and Elder Larry Barker officiating. Interment will follow in Laurel Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post #104. Online condolences may be made at www.atchleyfuneralhome.com
