THOMAS, JOHNNIE JOAN CARNES - 89, died peacefully in her sleep on April 30, 2005 at her home in Seymour. Mrs. Thomas, a lifelong Sevier Countian, was the last surviving child of Rhote Vany Wear Carnes and Walter Jennings Carnes, Spanish-American War veteran . She was born June 29, 1915, at Henderson Springs on Walden's Creek at her family's inherited farm, which adjoined the farms of her many cousins. This land was a gift in 1887 from Richard West Crowson to his daughter Mary Crowson Wear and her nine children, including Mrs. Thomas' mother.
Mrs. Thomas, the sixth of nine children, was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters: Herman, Sam, Robert, Dick, Henry, and Paul Carnes, Mary Carnes Reed, and Ruth Carnes Duke. She was also predeceased by her husband of 49 years Henry Thomas. The couple married August 1, 1938. Johnnie and Henry Thomas were well-known vendors at the Old Market House in Knoxville, where they sold their garden vegetables from their truck. An inspiration to family and friends, the Thomases were known for their honesty as well as their hard work and dedication to their working farm. Their Seymour farmhouse and barn are over 100 years old. Mr. Thomas' grandfather blazed the farmland with an ax. Descended from pioneer Tennessee settlers, Johnnie Carnes Thomas was the great-great-granddaughter of Col. Samuel Wear, who fought at Kings Mountain and in the Indian Wars, and his wife Mary Thompson Wear. Mrs. Thomas' grandparents were Thomas Jefferson Wear and Mary Crowson Wear and John H. Carnes, Civil War veteran, and Mary Fox Carnes. Mrs. Thomas is survived by several nieces, nephews, their children, and grandchildren. Special friends and neighbors include Jim and Red Watson and their children. Special family caretakers were R. L. Carnes and Leona Fleming. Mrs. Thomas was lovingly cared for in the last few years of her life by Dian Garrett, Hazel Headrick, and Zora Dyer. Graveside services will be conducted by Dr. Bruce Yates at Chilhowee Cemetery on Monday, May 2 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Baptist Hospice P.O. Box 22 Knoxville, TN 37901 or a charity of your choice. Friends may call from 6 - 7 pm on Sunday at Highland South Funeral Home 573-7300.
