Luke Ownby, age 82, of Gatlinburg, passed away Tuesday, June 21, 2005, at Pigeon Forge Care and Rehab. He worked as a construction foreman for the Blaine Hayes Construction Company of Knoxville for several years. Luke was saved as a teenager while kneeling beside his sick mother’s bedside and was a member of the Cartertown Baptist Church in Gatlinburg.
His ancestors included parents William Harrison and Delilah Reagan Ownby. His third great grandfather James Ownby, served in Colonel John Sevier’s North Carolina Regiment and fought in the Battle of Kings Mountain during the Revolutionary War. Luke’s mother Delilah Reagan Ownby’s ancestors lead to Timothy Reagan who fought at the Battle of Brandywine under General George Washington’s command during the American Revolution. Many of these Reagan and Ownby descendants are members of the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution continuing family tradition of loyalty to freedom of religion and democracy in America.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Harvey Lee Ownby, Roy Hubert Ownby; sisters Anna Lee Huskey, Elizabeth Alice Shultz, and Flora Eliza King.
Survivors include wife, Alma Huskey Ownby, son Willie Gene Ownby; brothers William Harrison “Bud” Ownby, Marion Alford Ownby and sister Mattie Bell Trentham, along with many beloved nephews and nieces.
Funeral service 2 PM Friday at Atchley’s Smoky Mountain Chapel in Pigeon Forge with the Rev. Mitch Ayers officiating. Interment will follow in Smoky Mountain Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Thursday at Atchley’s Smoky Mountain Chapel, 220 Emert Street, Pigeon Forge. (www.atchleyfuneralhome.com)
