NEWPORT - A Sevierville man was indicted Wednesday in connection with the deaths of two men who were found two weekends ago in the Pigeon River in Cocke County, according to Al Schmutzer Jr., district attorney for the fourth judicial district.
A Cocke County Grand Jury indicted Shannon Ted Adams, 35, of 3690 Phillips Road, with the first-degree murders of Butch Wayne Phillips and Sherman Ray "Hank" Phillips.
Schmutzer said both men were shot several times, but he declined to discuss a motive. Authorities said Adams knew the men because he was dating the sister of Butch Phillips.
On Saturday, Nov. 20, the body of Butch Phillips was found in the Pigeon River, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI). The next day, his uncle Hank Phillips, was found downstream from the first body, TBI officials said.
Both men were Dandridge residents at the time of their deaths, but Butch Phillips was thought to have also lived in Sevierville recently, TBI officials said.
Adams was arraigned before Circuit Court Judge Ben Hooper, who withheld setting a bond because Adams is presently being held on a parole revocation warrant for aggravated kidnapping. He did not enter a plea during his arraignment.
"Members of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department and TBI are to be commended for their hard work they put into the case," said Schmutzer. "Especially Det. Robert Caldwell and Agents Derrick Newport and Mike Hannon, who, along with others, worked over the holidays to solve this case."
