Tommie “Tinker” Samples, 75, of Newport, passed away Saturday morning, November 6, 2004, after a lengthy illness.
Tinker was a Cocke County native who was raised in the Bybee community.
She worked with her Aunt Nannie Scott Dennis at Scott’s Florist, located on Main Street, downtown Newport. After Nannie’s death, Tinker became owner and manager of the florist.
She managed the shop from the early 60’s to the mid 90’s, when she retired because of illness. Her daughter, Janie, continued to operate the florist until 2003, at which time, she chose to sell the shop to care for her mother.
She was a member of First Christian Church of Newport.
She was preceded in death by her son, Joe Samples; parents, Eloise and Harry Melton; and sister, Ina Jane “Tilly” Kyker.
Survivors include her daughter, Janie Littleton; grandson, Anthony, and great-granddaughter, Brittany, all of Newport; brother, Harry Melton, of Newport; aunt, Georgia Thomas, of Newport; niece, Lisa Caldwell, of Tampa, Fla.; and nephews, Tommy Smith and Jeff Kyker, both of Newport.
Cremation services provided by Costner-Maloy.
