Fritz Leiber, 65, Shakespearean actor, and former Chicagoan, died yesterday of a heart attack in his home in Pacific Palisades, Cal. Services will be held there Tuesday. He leaves his widow, Virginia, and a son, Fritz Jr.
Mr. Leiber, who was born in Chicago, joined a troupe of Shakespearean actors when 18 years old, and toured the United States for several seasons. He later acted with David Warfield and Robert Mantell, noted actors. In 1917 he made the motion picture "Antony and Cleopatra," in which he starred with Theda Bara. In 1920 he formed his own Shakespearean company.
In 1929, he became the director and star when the Chicago Civic Shakespeare society was organized. In 1934, he reorganized his own company and again toured the nation.
Mr. Leiber is survived by his widow, the former Virginia Bronson of Pacific Palisades, a son, Fritz Jr., and a sister, Marie, both of Chicago.
