Two die in three-vehicle wreck
Officers say alcohol, speed factors in crash that also injured four
By News Sentinel staffNovember 6, 2005
Two people died Friday afternoon and four were injured in a three-vehicle wreck in Cocke County, authorities said.
According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Carrie B. Norrell, 33, of Cosby, Tenn., and Eliza K. Coggins, 47, of Hartford were killed in the 2:45 p.m. wreck on U.S. Highway 321, just south of the Foothills Parkway entrance.
THP Trooper Claude Strange said the accident occurred when a 1990 Chevrolet pickup, operated by Andrew K. Rolen, 28, of Sevierville, was northbound when the right wheels of the vehicle dropped off the roadway in a curve while "traveling too fast for the conditions."
Rolen overcorrected, and his truck crossed the centerline into the southbound lane, sideswiping a 1998 Honda CRV driven by Calvin Stigler, 77, of Memphis, Strange said.
"When he overcorrected, he went into a sideways spin, spinning my car around and then sliding head-on into the car behind me," Stigler said at the scene.
The truck sliding broadside struck a 1993 Ford Taurus driven by Samantha O. Henry, 19, of Parrottsville. Coggins was a passenger in the rear seat of the Taurus.
After striking Henry's vehicle, the truck overturned, ejecting Rolen and partially ejecting Norrell.
"She was partially pinned under the truck, which came to rest on its side," Strange said. The vehicle had to be lifted to free the victim.
Both drivers were flown from the scene by medical helicopters to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. On Saturday, they were listed in serious condition.
Two other passengers in the Taurus, Elijah Henry, the 1-year-old son of Samantha Henry, and Wesley Linkes, 43, of Hartford, were transported to Baptist Hospital of Cocke County. Linkes was treated and released. The child was flown to the Knoxville facility. A hospital spokeswoman declined to release the condition of the child on Saturday.
Officers said both alcohol and speed on the part of Rolen were contributing factors in the collision, and charges are pending further investigation.
