Phil Stafford(May 26, 1926 - December 4, 2005)
O.P. “Phil” Stafford age 79 of Maryville died peacefully Sunday morning. He was the youngest of eleven children born to John Neubert and Gertrude Henry Stafford on a farm in Wildwood, TN. He attended Porter High School and left early to join the Navy in 1943. He served in the Pacific Theater and was instrumental in the recapture of islands around the Philippines and Okinawa as a Seaman Second Class. He operated a LCVP (landing craft vehicle and personnel) transporting troops to shore. Later Phil owned and ran businesses ranging from a mechanic shop in Maryville to Permasheen and Evershine Chemical Companies in Atlanta, GA where he lived for over 20 years. A lifelong sales man, he sold everything from perfume and hosiery to commercial real estate. He holds patents for his swimming pool safety device and has written an, as yet unpublished novel. In 2002 Phil experienced one of his proudest moments; In a special Blount High School commencement ceremony he received his High School Diploma over 60 years after it was due to him. O.P. “Phil” Stafford was a devout baseball and football fan and especially loved the VOLS. He loved to laugh and tell or hear a good story. He especially loved his large family never recognizing the difference between his “step” children and “real” children. He doted on his many grandchildren, nieces and nephews, all who knew him as Papa. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Claude, Paul, Fred, John, Edwin and Andy; sisters, Mabel Gillespie and Alice England.
