NEWPORT-Mason Shults a third-grade student at Newport Grammar School made a donation of can tabs to local Shriners for the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
Shults said, "the Shriners Hospitals had helped a member of his family many years ago and he wanted to give back to the Shriners." Shults said that his Mamaw and Papaw (Larry and Heather Shults), his daddy, Shannon Shults, and his friends Sissy, Glenn and Sandy Townsend, Brenda Foust and Randy Dennis had helped him collect the tabs.
Shults donated approximately 10 gallons of tabs to Shrine Nobles Jim Barker and Maurice Shults.
The tabs will be delivered to the Shriners Hospital for Children in Greeneville, S.C.
Jim Barker the President of the Cocke County Shrine Club said, “It always touches your heart to see a healthy child that is interested in helping provide medical care for children that are less fortunate.”
The Shriners Hospital has been receiving donated can tabs since mid-2009. They have received 23,000 pounds to date and recycled them for a $17,352.56 cumulative donation. Recycling amounts for the tabs follow the market. The Hospital has gotten as high as $.82/lb to as low as $.51. Market value today is $.55/lb. It takes between 1200 and 1400 tabs to make one pound. The donation goes into the hospital’s general operating fund to help offset expenses. Donated can tabs are organized and taken by a volunteer for recycling.
Anyone, that is interested in donating can tabs to the Shriners, can call Jim Barker at 865-607-5815 or write the Cocke County Shrine Club at P.O. Box 1628 Newport,Tn 37822.
