John held numerous jobs in his lifetime, but retired from the Jeep Corporation in Toledo, Ohio, in 1992 after 30 years of service. John is a member of First Baptist church of Friendsville and enjoyed playing golf. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel (in 2009) ; his sister Dorothy Sands; half-sister, Marie; half-brothers, J.M. Earl and Willie. He is survived by his loving children, daughter, Leila Alice Spurling; sons, Richard (Marsha), Steve (Loletta), John (Wendy), Sam (Hannah), George (Lucy), Bill & Bob Spurling; 12 grandchildren; 6 step-grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be at 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Smith West Chapel. Interment will follow at Marble Hill Church Cemetery.
