Oda Lee Monroe Purkey, age 84, of New Market, passed away Wednesday, May 13, 2015. She was born December 23, 1930 in Sevier County. Oda attended Temple Baptist Church in Knoxville. She was a beautician for many years. She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching the Smokey Bears and UT Football. Oda's passion in life was the love she shared with her family.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Morris "Hall" Monroe, Sr.; grandson, Steven Dale Monroe, Jr.; parents, Jesse and Hettie Hodge Douglas; sisters, Wilma Hall, Georgia Tallent, Ruth Dockery, Katie Marine, Katherine Cummings Andes, Florence Randolph; and brother, J.B. Douglas.
Oda is survived by her husband, Doyt Ray Purkey; children, Steven Monroe and daughter-in-law, Mary Louise Monroe, Gary Monroe and wife, Sandra, Morris Monroe, Jr. and wife, Myra, and Linda McCarter and husband, Mark; grandchildren, Samantha Collins, Lauren Monroe, Emily Click, Jesse McCarter, Phillip Monroe, Patrick Monroe, Sarah Monroe, Noah McCarter; great-grandchildren, Grayson Click, Robert "Oz" Collins, Stuart Collins, Holden Click, and Jayden Monroe; sisters, Ann Depew and husband, Jack, Carolyn Williams and husband, Ed, and Nell Buckner; many special nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Union Grove Cemetery Fund, 2786 Douglas Dam Road, Sevierville, TN 37876.
Funeral service 6 PM Friday in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Lawson and Rev. Jerry Hyder officiating. Family and friends will meet for graveside service and interment 10:30 AM Saturday in Union Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 PM Friday at Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville.
