HICKMAN, MARILYN CATE - age 78, of South Knoxville, passed away Wednesday, April 27, 2011 in Atlanta, Georgia after a brief struggle with ovarian cancer. She was a longtime member of Valley Grove Baptist Church. She raised many children during her 25 years of in-home childcare. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edith (E.T.) and Martha Cate; husband Charlie Hickman; sisters Bernice Foland and Irene Munsey. Marilyn is survived by her children Mike Hickman and Dawn Hickman McElhaney of Atlanta, GA. Also surviving: son-in-law, Doug McElhaney, grandchildren, Emily and Carson McElhaney; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jean and Kenneth Cannon, Barbara and Clifford Martin; sisters Yvonne Bales and Carolyn Marie Cate; brothers and sisters-in-law, Thurman and Norma Cate, J. Harold and Carolyn Scarlett Cate and numerous nieces and nephews. Special sister-in-law Imogene Burnette and nephew Charles Burnette. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Valley Grove Baptist Church Children's Ministry for Camp Ba-Yo-Ca scholarships. Donations may be sent to Valley Grove Baptist Church at 9000 Old Sevierville Pike, Knoxville, TN 37920. The family will receive friends at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Hwy on Saturday, April 30, 2011 from 6-8pm. Valley Grove Baptist Church will hold funeral services on Sunday, May 1, 2011 at 2pm. Dr.'s William Sims and Chad Rittenhouse will officiate. Interment will follow at Highland South Cemetery. Pallbearers include: Clifford Martin, Charles Bush, Ben Bush, Billy Joe Guffey, J. Harold Cate and Thurman Cate. Honorary Pallbearers include: Doug McElhaney, Bud Foland, Mike Garland, Kenneth Cannon, Dewey Munsey and Ron Maples.
