PHIPPS, ELZA GENE - age 68, of Friendsville, passed away Wednesday evening, October 10, 2001, at the family home. Member of Mason Lodge #5 F&AM in Columbus, Mississippi. Retired from the U. S. Air Force with over 20 years of service, having served during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Era. Preceded in death by daughter, Debra Ann Phipps; parents, Elza Victor and Lassie Worley Phipps; sister, Joyce Kirpes. Survivors: daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Ray Hurst of Clarksville, Tenn., Susie and George Cagle of Decatur, Ala., Diane and Don Woody of Morristown; grandchildren, Doug and Bradley Hurst, George William Cagle, Crystal Cagle, Michelle and Allison Woody; former wife, Pauline Phipps of Maryville, and several nieces and nephews. Friend, Irene Brown of Maryville. Funeral service 8 p.m. Friday, October 12, 2001, Miller Funeral Home Magnolia Chapel, Rev. Willard Willis officiating. Interment 11 a.m. Saturday at Sherwood Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Miller Funeral Home, Maryville.
