ROY "POPPY" BROWN, age 79, of Dandridge, TN passed away Wednesday evening, December 31, 2008 following a sudden illness. Roy was a prominent businessman of Dandridge, having owned and operated the City Barber Shop as a barber for over 55 years. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army and a certified jumpmaster with the 82nd Airborne Division. Roy was active in his community, being a member of the First Baptist Church of Dandridge, charter member of the Jefferson County Rescue Squad, member of the Dandridge Volunteer Fire Department, a 32nd Degree Mason, belonging to the Brazelton Lodge #190 F & AM, and served on the Dandridge City Council for 24 years. He was the son of the late Arthur and Ruth Newman Brown and was preceded in death by his sisters, Elsie Newman and Della "Todd" France; and brother, Glen Brown. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy Ogle Brown; sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Patti Brown, Scott and Bessie Brown; grandchildren, Chris Brown, Stephanie Reeves, Darrell and Jerry Brown; great-grandchildren, Emma Reeves, Ashley, Katie and Jared Brown; sister, Blanche Thornhill; several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts be made to the Jefferson County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 261, Dandridge, TN or the Dandridge Volunteer Fire Department, P. O. Box 249, Dandridge, TN 37725. Funeral service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, January 3, 2008 at the First Baptist Church of Dandridge with Dr. Robert McCray and Dr. Robert Brown officiating. Interment graveside service with military honors will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Grants Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
