October 10, 1922 - September 1, 2014 Resided in Oak Ridge, TN Troy Columbus Trotter, age 91of Oak Ridge died Monday, September 1, 2014. He was born on October 10, 1922, in Sevierville, Tennessee, and lived on the family farm in Sevierville during his youth. As a young man, he left the farm to attend The University of Tennessee where he enrolled in The College of Engineering. While living in a house adjacent to "The Hill," he and his brother-in-law, Joe Elder, while listening to the radio, learned of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Within a short time, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard, ultimately serving on the U.S.S. Peoria which conducted anti-submarine convoy duties in both the Atlantic and Mediterranean Theaters. During these wartime years, he also met and married Marion Estella Gose. After the war's end, Troy returned to The University and graduated with a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering in 1947. After graduating and working at several engineering positions in Tennessee, he began working at the Y-12 Plant in Oak Ridge on January 10, 1950. His technical expertise and remarkable managerial skills enabled him to quickly rise through the ranks, and culminated in 1976 with his promotion to Director of Project Engineering, overseeing Project Engineering Organizations at Y-12, K-25, and X-10 (ORNL), as well as expansion of production capabilities. Furthermore, he was responsible for coordination of expansion of the gaseous diffusion plants at Paducah, Kentucky, and Portsmouth, Ohio. Although he retired in 1986, he continued to work as a consultant for the next decade. During his retirement, he and his wife, Reva, enjoyed spending winters in Florida, and summers at their residence in Townsend. In recent years, he greatly enjoyed spending time with family and friends, participating in activities with his children and grandchildren, as well as his nieces and nephews. In reflecting on his life, we are reminded of the Paul's comments: "… the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith" (2 Timothy 4:6-7). Our father, grandfather, uncle, and friend was a child of God, and it is to God whom he returns! Survived by: Son and Daughter-in-Law: Steven M. Trotter and Kimberly D. Gwinn; Daughter and Son-in-Law: Susan Trotter Atchley and Brent Lee Atchley. Beloved Grandchildren: Jackson Lucas (Luke) Trotter, Emily Elise Atchley, and Abbey Lauren Atchley; Sisters-in-Law: Lorene Gose and Mildred Gose. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Church or charity of your choice, or to The University of Tennessee Foundation, Inc. designated for the Troy C. Trotter Distinguished Lectureship Endowment, UT Knoxville, College of Engineering Development Office, 118 Perkins Hall, Knoxville, TN 37996-2012. The purpose of the Troy C. Trotter Distinguished Lectureship is to annually bring to campus a nationally recognized expert in an area of interest to the field of Chemical Engineering. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, 3:00 p.m., at First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge, Tennessee with The Rev. Dr. Frank E. Trotter, Jr. and The Rev. Jenny Caughman officiating.
