Rawlings, Sevierville businessman, dies at 82
By: J.J. KINDRED, Staff Writer December 14, 2005
SEVIERVILLE - Kenneth W. Rawlings Jr. was known as a man who basically "just loved people," according to his cousin and long-time business partner, L.P. Rawlings Jr.
"(Loving people) was his main attribute," said Rawlings. "We had a conversation a while back when he said, 'We've worked together 50 years and we still speak to each other.' That should tell you the whole story right there."
Kenneth Rawlings Jr., 82, died Saturday at his residence.
Born in Hamblen County, Rawlings began assisting his father and uncles in the operation of the successful furniture store and funeral home bearing their last name.
"We worked at it since we were kids and before we had driver's licenses," said L.P. Rawlings.
Rawlings son, Kenneth Rawlings III, said following in his grandfather's footsteps was what his father wanted to do.
"The business was over 100 years old and he celebrated that anniversary in 2002," he said. "He truly enjoyed (the business) and enjoyed working with the people.
"He would have wanted to have been remembered as a part of the community and as a servant to the people," Kenneth Rawlings III said. "Not only in business, but he served on numerous county commissions, and he built one of the water plants as well as serving on the school board. He was definitely involved in things going on to make the community better."
Rawlings was a member of the United States Navy during World War II, and was an active member of the Sevierville First United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Marjorie "Mommy" McPherson Rawlings; his parents, Kenneth and Nellie Shanton Rawlings and several brothers and sisters.
Survivors include his son, Kenneth Rawlings III and wife Jan; grandson, M.P. Rawlings, all of California; and a sister, Hassie Nelle Bruce.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Shiloh Cemetery, with American Legion Post No. 104 performing military rites.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Sevierville First United Methodist Church building fund, 214 Cedar St., Sevierville, TN, 37862, or the Holston Home for Children, 404 Holston Drive, Greeneville, TN, 37743.
