Martha Anne Criddle died Monday, July 27, 2015.
She was born in Orangeburg , the daughter of the late Bennie and Geneva Thomas Criddle and the granddaughter of the late J.W. and Zillah Judy Criddle and Marion and Martha Anne Tarwater Thomas .
She graduated from Bowman High School and the University of South Carolina. She began her working career in textiles and lived and worked in Orangeburg , Pensacola, Florida, and Columbia. She also lived in Atlanta, working for a pharmaceutical company. She retired from Paralyzed Veterans of America, located at the VA Regional Office in Columbia, where she was awarded many certificates of appreciation and the coveted Distinguished Service Award.
She was accepted as a VISTA volunteer and a Peace Corps volunteer. She traveled extensively in Europe and the Caribbean.
While living in Columbia, she was active in Democratic politics, serving as president of the Lexington County Democratic Women's Council and treasurer of the South Carolina Democratic Women's Council. She also attended President Jimmy Carter's inauguration and the Democratic National Convention in Atlanta in 1988.
She also served as publicity chairperson of the Cayce/West Columbia Business and Professional Women's Club.
She was also active in her church, Northgate Baptist. She served as WMU director and on the Nominating Committee, Stewardship Committee and Youth Council.
She is survived by special cousins, Jane and Tommy Thomas ; special friends George and Sue Syfrett; and many other cousins and friends.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
