Lichlyter announces candidacy for county mayor
12-27-2005
Mitzy Hall Lichlyter of Newport has announced her candidacy for Cocke County Mayor.
She is married to James "Marty" Lichlyter and has three daughters Brittany, Miranda and Morgan.
Lichlyter is presently a teacher at Cocke County High School and is a member of the Lions Club. She graduated Cocke County High School in 1984 and obtained her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from East Tennessee State University, Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction from Tusculum College, Education Specialist degree in Administration and Supervision, and Doctorate in Leadership and Professional Practice from Trevecca Nazarene University.
Lichlyter said that she is seeking the office of Cocke County Mayor "to change to a progressive county. I want to help bring in jobs to this county by forming a partnership with schools as well as working with the economic commission to reach this goal. I care about Cocke County and want Cocke County to be the best it can be."
When asked about specific issues and how to address them, Lichlyter said, that she would like training for those that want it and partnership business and schools to bring in industry. She stated that she will listen to what Cocke County people want.
"Everyone is a life-long learner, "she said. "To become a progressive county, which is what Cocke County should be, the county needs to focus on training people to learn the technology skills which are needed for today's jobs. Some of this training may involve using programs, which Cocke County already has like the GED or Adult High School.
"Others need to be added through grants, which would not cost the county. Then there are some grants that exist but no one know about for example: Cocke County school teachers can get a $5000 grant paid toward their student loan when they graduate with a B.S., M.S., Ed. S. or doctorate degree. This grant can be used for every degree. So a teacher could get up to $20,000. Most teachers do not know about this grant which should be advertised by the county."
Lichlyter continued, "Vocational education is another way people can get training through grants. This would allow them to learn basic computer skills up to more advanced technical training."
She thinks that schools are the key to bringing in new businesses to counties saying, "most businesses or industries want to know how schools are performing. This should be a focus, considering Cocke County Schools outperformed the state average on almost all aspects of accountability testing this year. The successful counties publicize their positive scores, and they have new business beginning to come to their counties."
Another focus for Lichlyter is to form a partnership between schools and business. She believes that many companies will train teachers how to produce their products, then the teacher trains the students. After successfully completing the coursework, the students are hired by these companies. "Why do the companies like this partnership," asked Lichlyter, "because it saves the company money and time, which would have been used to train the employees at the job. This partnership saves the company thousands of dollars a year, which is an incentive for them to bring their company to Cocke County."
Lichlyter thinks that she is the best choice for Cocke County Mayor because she has worked both in business and schools. She was the manager of the Burning Bush Restaurant for three years and is on her 13th year as a teacher. She has worked at James Furniture for 11 years. She believes that she knows what schools and businesses want and would be a great facilitator to partnership schools and industry together.
" I know the interest that both would have in the school-to-work partnership," she said. "Plus, I have a doctorate in Leadership and Professional Practice which will help in transitioning the county to becoming a progressive county focusing on partnering schools and industry together."
Lichlyter sums it up by saying, "I was born in Cocke County. I am a Cocke County High School graduate and only want to help the county. I want everyone who lives here to know that if you put your mind to reaching your goals - you will. Cocke County is full of intelligent people that just need to be told of their potential."

Only Democrat for county mayor's race withdraws
Source: The Newport Plain Talk <http://cocke.xtn.net> 01-27-2006
The only Democrat running for the county mayor's office pulled out the race on Thursday, according to the Cocke County Election Commission office.
Mitzy Hall Lichlyter said she decided to remove her name from the ballot because of family considerations.
She would have appeared as a Democratic candidate to face the winner of the May Republican primary in the August general election.
Lichlyter , a Cocke County High School math teacher, said that after realizing her family would need more of her time because a family member faced surgery and her children needed her, she decided to pull out.
"I was hoping that someone else would qualify," in her place, especially among Democrats, she said.
"I know that I could not have put the time into the campaign or the office," she said,
"I appreciate all the support I have received. Maybe times will be different in the future."
Lichlyter did not rule out a bid in the 2010 elections.
With her announcement, the only qualified candidates-all to run in the May Republican primary-are Mayor Iliff McMahan Jr., Joe Bacon, and Charles Lewis Moore, former office holder.
