Newport native Andy Tippitt started writing for fun in college. He ? nished his ? rst screenplay, Only in a Dream, in 1998. Although he never pursued making Only in a Dream into a movie, he always wondered if he could have pulled it off.
Tippitt started writing his second screenplay,”The ROOSTERS - Series 1,” in early 2011. After completion, he sent it off to several people that were in business. Tippitt credits the ? nal version of the script to the advice he received from a few “key players” in the ? lm industry, all of who have east Tennessee ties. Marshall Teague, also from Newport, Rich Middlemas, Oscar Award Winning Producer of the documentary “Undefeated”, and Brian Overholt, another Newport native, all gave Tippitt similar advice on the script. “When people who have made it in this industry give you advice, you take it,” said Tippitt. And the Roosters were born!
Tippitt decided to try and “pull it off” this time around. “I gathered some of the most talented people I knew, and we all sat down and hashed things out. Tank Williams and Jason Crippen (the co-stars) took a chance with me and we started ? lming last July. Those men put in some long days traveling all over God’s green earth with me.”
Tippitt believes the story behind the movie is as good as the story in the movie. “The fact that we ? nished the ? lm is still unbelievable to me. Not one person in the movie had any experience in acting, production, camera work, editing, sound, or anything else. But everybody involved was patient and we just kept shooting till we got it right. We had no consistent crew whatsoever. My young children were often on the set holding boom poles or even running the camera. We used people off the streets a couple of times.”
The original plan was to hire a production crew but it never came to fruition. By movie’s end, Tippitt had written, produced, directed, ? lmed, edited, mixed the sound, and acted in “The ROOSTERS”...in his spare time. “That was never the intention,” Tippitt said. “I now know why there are dozens of people on a typical movie set. This was the most challenging thing I’ve ever done.”
“The ROOSTERS” is based on a comic book that Coach Cade Buda (Tippitt) writes. Coach, a 5th grade math teacher, is ? nancially distraught and has reached wits end. He’s approached my two ex-Marines (Williams and Crippen) about using his renegade comic book stories to devise a series of scams that had never been pulled off anywhere in the world. Along their comic-al adventure, Coach learns that his knowledge of money, love, and happiness is deserving of an F. As the cops move in, the “Teach” eventually gets schooled by an unexpected visitor.
“ The ROOSTERS” is set in Newport and the majority of the ? lm was ? lmed in Cocke County. “What can I say? I love my hometown.”
Tippitt encoded ciphered numerology into the movie. “I hope part of the fun is trying to decipher all the hidden codes!”
“The ROOSTERS - Series 1” is the feature ? lm of Block 16 at the Knoxville Film Festival. It will be showing on Sunday, September 22 at 11:30 a.m. at Regal Downtown West Cinema. Each Block also consists of a short ? lm and/or short documentary. Tickets are limited and it is advised to get them in advance. Tippitt graduated from Cocke County High School in 1991 and is the son of Janice Buda Casey. He also set a state record for 7th grade math TCAP/TVAAS scores in 2011. His book, Edu-lution, was the B97.5 Book of the Month in February 2009.
