Retired Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper and current president of the board of Jefferson-Cocke County Utility District, Ed Oury, died early Monday morning. He was 75.
Oury had been in declining health for more than a year because of heart problems, and the business he had founded, Newport Bargain Barn, is being operated by his son, Chip Oury.
Jefferson-Cocke County Utility District General Manager Tommy Bible said, “Our gas utility and community has lost a strong leader and a friend. I had the privilege and pleasure of knowing Mr. Oury for over 20 years and I saw firsthand his personal commitment to providing quality service to the utility customer and his sincere interest in the individual employees that work for the utility. Mr. Oury was a very sharp businessperson and our utility and community benefited from his leadership. We are all going to miss him.”
In respect for the late president, the gas utility’s offices will be closed on Wednesday, August 18, from 10:15 a.m. until 12:15 p.m. for the burial service.
In January 1994, Oury was elected president of the utility district. At the time, he had 14 years experience in the utility industry, having served on the Newport Utilities Board from 1982-89 and the JCCUD board since August 1989.
He was born in Sevier County the son of Ed and Frankie (Newman) Oury. His father was a professional wrestler. Their five children grew up in Pigeon Forge. After graduation, young Eddie Oury joined the Navy just after World War II ended and was based in San Diego, California. He went on to attend state college and studied business administration.
When Oury returned to East Tennessee, he married Betty Miller, also a Sevier native.
They had four children: Kelly Webb, of Atlanta; Pam Holt, of Knoxville; Pat Brown, and Chip Oury, both of Newport.
In 1951, Oury was selected by the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) and worked in Scott County. During 1959, he left the THP for a short time because of an opportunity in the amusement industry in Morgan County but returned to work as a trooper. It was during this time that he moved to Cocke County.
He remained active in law enforcement until 1969, when he opened a wholesale food business in Newport. Jim Bush owned the block building off Highway 25E that Oury purchased and opened his food business. In later years, he expanded it, and last year, father and son, bought the former Electro-Voice building for warehousing.
Oury operated the business successfully for about 25 years before turning it over to his children: Chip and Pat Oury in 1994, when he retired in July that year. Chip Oury is now the sole operator of the original family business.
After the death of his first wife in 1989, Oury remarried in 1991. His wife, the former Nina Strunk, is from Morgan County and taught in the Knox County school system for 31 years.
Ed Oury devoted his time to his family, business, and public utilities but also enjoyed deep sea fishing in Florida and traveling to association meetings with fellow gas utility commissioners Bobby Wilson, Harry Chambers, Gary Hammonds, and Robert Overholt.
The funeral will be 8 p.m. today at Manes Funeral Home Chapel with burial on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Resthaven Memorial.

Eddie Oury, age 75, of Newport, was born July 15, 1929, passed away August 16, 2004, after a lengthy illness while at Morristown-Hamblen Hospital.
Mr. Oury was born and grew up in Pigeon Forge, and upon graduation, joined the Navy just after World War II ended. Being based in San Diego, California, he was able to attend state college there and studied business.
He was selected by the Tennessee Highway Patrol in 1951 and worked in Morgan and Scott counties. In 1959, he left the Tennesee Highway Patrol to pursue private business, but later decided to return to the Tennessee Highway Patrol and moved to Cocke County.
When Mr. Oury had the opportunity to go into business for himself, he left the Tennessee Highway Patrol in 1969 and opened a wholesale food business in Newport.
Mr. Oury was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Newport Masonic Lodge #234. After the death of his first wife, Betty Miller Oury in 1989, Mr. Oury remarried in 1991 to his wife, Nina Strunk Oury.
He is preceded in death by his father, Ed Oury, and brother, Jack Oury.
He is survived by his wife, Nina Strunk Oury; daughters, Pam Holt and husband, Randy Holt, of Knoxville; Patricia Brown Oury and husband, Larry (Harvey) Brown, of Newport; Kelly Webb and husband, Larry Webb, of Newport; son, Chip Oury, of Newport; step-children, Warren Strunk and wife, Sheila Strunk, of Lenoir City; Karen Logan and husband, Robert Logan, of Knoxville; mother, Frankie Oury, of Pigeon Forge; sisters, Jane Brady, of Pigeon Forge, and Dot McCall, of Arden, N.C.; brother, Robert Oury, of Pigeon Forge; grandchildren: Brian Holt, of Lewisburg, West Virginia; Joshua Holt, of Knoxville; Jason, Jessica, and Jordan Oury, all of Newport; Matthew Strunk, of Lenoir City; and Justin Tillson, of Knoxville; also many special nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Funeral services will be held 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 17, 2004, at Manes Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Scott Gorrell officiating.
Entombment will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in Resthaven Memorial Mausoleum.
Pallbearers will be Tommy Bible, Bill Gunter, Tom Baugh, Junior Phillips, Harry Chambers, Gary Hammonds, Robert Overholt, and Bobby Wilson.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Manes Funeral Home prior to the service.
