Ring caper becomes humorous, touching memory for family
The family of D.L. and Dorotha Cole.
By KAREN McELYEA
One of the funniest Christmas memories I have is one at the home of our parents, D.L. and Dorotha Cole. Daddy had given Mama a red coat (his favorite color) for some occasion, but Mama wasn’t that crazy about it, so it hung in the closet for several years.
This particular Christmas, Daddy had bought Mama a beautiful diamond ring and asked us kids to wrap it. So, we got a plan to put the ring in the pocket of the red coat that Mama never wore. We folded it and even put a price tag on the sleeve and wrapped it into a big beautiful gift, knowing when she opened it she would take it out and try it on and stick her hands in the pockets and find the ring and be surprised.
Christmas came and, just as we planned, she opened the gift, but did not realize it was the coat Daddy had given her years ago. She put it on and oohed and awed, and we all got so tickled. She finally stuck her hand in the pocket and found her ring.
She was so excited and surprised. We all had the best laugh, and neither Daddy or Mama realized it was the red coat from years ago.
Mama got a beautiful gift from Daddy and he got the gift of seeing her beautiful expression.
A huge part of our Christmas went to heaven Nov. 3, 2009, but Mama, you left us with the most wonderful memories any family could ask for. You and Daddy always made Christmas so special for us, and we will always have precious memories to pass on to our families. We love you, Mama and Daddy.
