He had been in declining health for the past two years. Born in Hartford, the son of the late Issac and Catherine McGaha Gates, he was the husband of Callie Justus Gates. He had been a Mantua, New Jersey, resident for 35 years and prior to that had resided in Woodbury and Monroeville, New Jersey. Before his retirement eight years ago, Mr. Gates had been employed with Ace Motors in Woodbury, New Jersey, for 25 years. He was preceded in death by a son, James Fred Gates; and a sister, Myrtle Nutt. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Mary G. West, of Pittsgrove, New Jersey; a brother, James Thomas Gates of Newport; a sister, Agnes Haney of Monroeville, New Jersey; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. from the Padgett Funeral Home, 1107 State Highway #77, Bridgeton, New Jersey. The interment will be made at Olivet Cemetery in Pittsgrove Township, New Jersey. Friends may call on Wednesday evening from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Padgett Funeral Home, Bridgeton, New Jersey, is in charge.
