Died: 01-04-2004 Callie Gates, age 79, of Mantua, N.J., died Sunday morning, January 4, 2004, at Underwood Memorial Hospital in Woodbury, N.J., where she had been a patient for five days. She had been in declining health for several years.
Born in Del Rio, Tennessee, the daughter of the late Martin and Malinda Jane Gunter Justus, she was the wife of the late Tillard A. Gates. She had been a Mantua resident for the past 40 years.
Before her retirement, she had been employed as a seamstress with the Woodbury Dress Company and the Jodi Scott Dress Company in Pitman, N.J.
Mrs. Gates was a member of the International Ladies Garment Union Local 330 in New York City and the Haddonfield Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also a member of the First Families of Tennessee Organization and Philadelphia Chapter 972 United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Surviving are a daughter, Mary G. West, of Pittsgrove, N.J.; two brothers, William Justus and Frank Justus, of Newport, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Richard Gates, Robert Gates, and Tom West, of Mantua, and Rebecca West and Elizabeth Cox, of Pittsgrove, and Christina Smith, of Marshall, AR.; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, James Fred Gates; one brother, Haskell Justus; and three sisters, Ina Mantooth, Unave Justus, and Mae Moore Strange.
A time of remembrance for family and friends will be held at the Padgett Funeral Home, 1107 State Highway #77, Upper Deerfield Township, Bridgeton, N.J., on Tuesday, January 6th, at 1 p.m.
Burial will be made at Olivet Cemetery in Pittsgrove Township.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions in Mrs. Gates memory be made to the Callie Justus Gates Memorial Scholarship of the Matthew Fountaine Maury C of C, Chapter 791-c/o Betty Mastin, 304 Bortons Mill Road, Cherry Hill, N.J. 08304.
