Ava Jean Sims Hornung, age 89, passed away May 11, 2015 at her home in Sevierville, TN.
She was born in 1925 in Sevier County, daughter of the late James Crockett Sims and Ruby Henderson Sims. She was very proud of her heritage as one of the founding families. Ava and her husband John enjoyed traveling and loved life. They enjoyed going to their condo in Myrtle Beach. Their travels also included several trips to Europe and to Ireland to visit John's family. They both had their special interest and talked fondly of their trip to the Kentucky Derby. She always enjoyed a day trip to Cades Cove. Ava was generous and often letting friends stay at their Myrtle Beach condo.
She worked at several banks in California and Tennessee and was always involved in the community such as serving on Sevier County Election Commission and Sevier County Schools to name a few. Like her mother Ruby, Ava enjoyed telling stories about her family and the history of the Sevier County. She often told stories about the old schools, farms, and local characters. She had a wealth of knowledge of the history of Sevier County and provided information and pictures to several groups.
She is survived by her husband of 46 years, John Hornung; step-son, Bill Hornung; brothers, James Emory Sims and his wife Mimi, and Tommy Sims (Kim); and sister, Janie Sims Griffin.
Several other close family members that hold her dear to their hearts include nephews and nieces, Patricia Sims Thomas and her two sons, Eric and Dustin; Karen Veal (Ken); Wayne Turner Sims (Sylvia); and Andrew Henderson Sims and his two children, Colton and Lindsay.
She was preceded in death by her son, Joe Neil Lewelling, and her parents, James Crockett Sims and Ruby Henderson Sims.
The family will receive friends 10-11 AM Saturday, May 16, 2015 with a funeral service to follow at 11 AM in the Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville with Rev. Jerry Hyder officiating. Interment will follow in Shiloh Cemetery, 118 Henderson Road, Pigeon Forge, TN. Online condolences may be made at www.atchleyfuneralhome.com.
