Carroll Ray Kerley, age 86, of Sevierville, TN, went to be with our Lord on Monday, December 27, 2010. Raised in the community of Waldens Creek in Sevier County, TN, Ray left Sevier County High School during his senior year to volunteer for the Army and served with the Joint Assault Signal Corps in the Pacific Theater during World War II from 1943 to 1946. After returning from service he attended the College of William and Mary in Virginia under a football scholarship, but soon decided to return to Sevier County to seek employment and support his family. In 1947 he married his loving and devoted wife Reba who has been faithfully caring for him during his prolonged illness. Ray was employed by the Sevier County Electric System for 41 years before he retired in 1987. He loved his family and was a caring and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed camping, vacations at the beach, picnics in the mountains, and travel. He was a faithful Christian and a member of the First Baptist Church of Sevierville, TN for more than 60 years. The family would like to express a special thank-you to the staff of Mountain Brook Village Assisted Living and Amedisys Hospice Service.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Jessie Kerley, brothers Perryman, Glenn, Harrison, and Seldon Kerley and sisters Hazel Kerley, Alma Cardwell, Grace Johnson, Estle Johnson, Lillie Conner, Nancy Caton, and Julia Caton.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Reba Roberts Kerley of Sevierville, TN, sons Jim Kerley of Sevierville, TN, and Bill and his wife Barbara Kerley of Idaho Falls, ID, and grandchildren Rachel Kerley of Columbia, SC, and Cameron Kerley of Idaho Falls, ID.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to First Baptist Church of Sevierville Building Fund, 317 Parkway, Sevierville, TN 37862.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, December 30, with funeral services beginning at 5pm in the East Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Hyder and Rev. Craig Mintz officiating. Family and friends will meet 11 a.m. Friday morning in Shiloh Cemetery for graveside service and interment with military honors provided by American Legion Post 104.
