Vanita Shanks Christopher, age 90 of Knoxville, passed away on Thursday, November 7, 2013 in Franklin, TN. Vanita was born in Talbot, TN on March 29, 1923 and graduated from Morristown High School in 1941. She attended the Knoxville Business College in 1941-1942 where she studied business writing. She worked for the U.S. Civil Services as a clerk-stenographer for the U.S. Selective Service Systems in Strawberry Plains, TN; the War Dept. of the Army Air Forces in Boca Raton, FL; the War Assets Administration in Knoxville and the USAR Advisor Group in Knoxville from 1942-1954. She assisted her husband, John Christopher, Jr. with his shoe repair business, United Shoe Repair, which served the Knoxville community for over 40 years. Mrs. Christopher and her husband became members of Sevier Heights Baptist Church on March 2, 1947 where she has been a member for over 60 years. Mrs. Christopher was an avid genealogist and became a member of the East Tennessee Historical Society's First Families of Tennessee on November 5, 1998. Vanita enjoyed gardening, had a talent for sewing, enjoyed gospel hymns and music, and taking Sunday drives with family.
Mrs. Christopher is preceded in death by her parents, Coy Elmer Shanks and Lucille Shanks; sister, Marcella Fleming; brother, Coy Elmer Shanks, Jr.; her husband of 62 years, John Christopher, Jr.; and daughter, Janice Christopher McCoy.
Mrs. Christopher is survived by her son-in-law Mack McCoy (Marika Avery); granddaughter, Heather McCoy (Samuel Riggan); grandson, Ryan McCoy (Tyler McCoy); niece, Sara Fleming Johnson (Bob Johnson); nephew, Mike Shanks; lifelong friend, Betty Vesser.
Memorials may be made to Sevier Heights Baptist Church, 3232 Alcoa Highway, Knoxville, TN 37920.
The family would like to extend their gratitude and appreciation to Morningside of Franklin, in Franklin, TN and Willowbrook Hospice for their respectful and dignified care, and for becoming an extended family to Mrs. Christopher. Their compassion and love will always be remembered.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 10 from 12 Noon until 2:00 PM with service to follow at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Berry Funeral Home, 3704 Chapman Highway, Knoxville, TN, with Rev. Charlie McNutt officiating.
Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, 4500 Woodlawn Pike, Knoxville, TN. Condolences may be offered at www.berryfuneralhome.com.
