JOHNSON, JOE B. - passed away June 18, 2009. He was born on August 28, 1915 and raised in Kodak, Tennessee where his parents, George and Sally Johnson; five sisters and three brothers preceded him in death. Upon completion of a Master of Science degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, he married Esther Hensel Mines and moved west. He served as School Administrator at Winona, Peshastin, Almira, and lastly at Reardan, Washington where the present Athletic Field is named in his honor. During his administrative career, he served as president of Chelan and Lincoln County Educational and Professional Associations. He was president of the Northwest District Superintendents Association, was a member of the State Advisory Committee for Vocational Education, and was one of two representatives on the State Board for Small Schools. He was also on the Advisory Committee to the State Association of School Directors. He was a past president of the Peshastin Kiwanis Club where he spearheaded the effort that resulted in the construction of the Peshastin-Dryden football field and track. As a proud veteran of World War II, he served in Alaska and Guam and was a member of the American Legion Post No. 113, Reardan, Washington. He was also a past president of the Reardan Lions Club. His life was largely spent in service to youth, resulting in being awarded the Honorary State Farmer Degree at the 1966 State F.F.A. convention for his service to youth in Agriculture. Father of Eagle Scouts, Bruce C. Johnson and Jay A. Johnson, Joe was a member of the Inland Empire Council Executive Board, was both a sustaining member and a 100 Club member of this Council. He participated in many back packing trips, canoe trips, and accompanied an Inland Empire District contingent of scouts to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico for a leadership training experience. He was the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award for meritorious service to scouting. In addition to these awards, he was voted the "Citizen of the Year" by the Reardan Lions Club for outstanding service to the community. He also served as Grand Marshall for the 1998 Reardan Mule Days Parade. Special interests included being a loyal fan of the Reardan Indians and Booster Club. He was a lifelong avid hunter and fisherman and was known for the tall tales he could tell about these experiences. The Johnsons maintained a residence at Loon Lake, Washington where they entertained many friends over the years. Joe was a past president of Independence Beach Association and took an active part in supporting the worthwhile projects of the Loon Lake Property Owners Association and the Loon Lake Loon Association. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Esther, who lives at the Riverview Retirement Community in Spokane, Washington; sister, Carrie Swann of Kodak, Tennessee; son, Bruce and wife, Tammy Johnson of Reardan, Washington; and grandson Joseph of Seattle, Washington; and son, Jay and wife, Judy Johnson of East Wenatchee, Washington; and grandchildren Gavin and Shelby Johnson and Stacy Zimmerman; a brother-in-law, Bob Hensel and wife, Jane reside in East Wenatchee, Washington. There are numerous nephews and nieces from Tennessee, Washington, Oregon, Massachusetts, and Alaska. A memorial service was held at the Reardan High School Gymnasium at 2:00 pm on Sunday, June 28th. Memorial contributions may be made to the Reardan Booster Club, Box 398, Reardan, Washington 99029, or the charity of your choice.
