April 6, 1933 - July 12, 2016
Resided in Sevierville, TN
David Ray Johnson finished his race peacefully in the early hours of July 12, 2016, surrounded by his family. He was born April 6, 1933, during the depths of the Great Depression. A son of Appalachia, he worked hard, lived the American Dream and left a legacy of faith, love and perseverance.
He married his dream girl, Dorothy Louise Sims, on April 28, 1956, and she was at his side for the next 60-plus years, holding his hand as he breathed his last. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Judson Johnson and Cora Mae Ownby Johnson; sister, Ethel Johnson Luttrell; brother, Gene Carroll Johnson and sister, Doris Johnson Baker; loving in-laws, James Ralph Sims and Gladys Atchley Sims.
Mr. Johnson was a high school football captain, senior class president, a Golden Gloves boxer and, after high school, joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He worked for the Bell telephone companies for 37 years, starting out climbing poles and installing phones in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, before adapting to the digital age by becoming a bit of a computer guru in central offices in Knoxville, Tennessee.
He coached Little League football and baseball, forever influencing many young men, including his sons. Mr. Johnson trained police and search-and-rescue dogs, participating in several high-profile searches for missing people. In middle age, he became an avid hiker, walking ultra-long distances in the Smokies, including climbing Mount LeConte with Dorothy and their friends.
He is survived by wife, Dorothy, sons Greg Johnson and wife, Diane; Jeff Johnson and wife, Deana; Gary Johnson and Kristin Rees; grandchildren Reed Johnson and wife, Amy; Haley Johnson Warner and husband, Josh, and great-grandson Andrew; Micah Johnson; Dexter Johnson and great-grandson Julian; Jamison Johnson and Alana Whiton; Jenissa Johnson; Jonathan Johnson and Daniel Johnson; as well as sisters, Evelyn Johnson Hass and Edith Johnson Brooks; and brother, Arley Johnson.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Smoky Mountain Area Rescue Ministries, P.O. Box 5968, Sevierville, TN 37864 and Sevier County Food Ministry, P.O. Box 6042, Sevierville, TN 37864.
