Henderson family installs barn quilt on sixth-generation Sevierville barn
Standing in front of the barn quilt are, left to right, Velda Henderson Price (Betha Henderson’s daughter), Lindsey Simpson (artist/great-granddaughter), Bertha Henderson and Anna Simpson (great- granddaughter).
The barn was built within a few years of the house, so it is believed the barn might be around 100 years old.
Last month, the family of Bertha Henderson, 88, of Sevierville, gathered to celebrate her birthday.
Henderson and her family represent five generations living on the family farm in Sevierville, with a sixth generation soon to be born. She and her husband, Clarence Henderson, recently deceased, have five children (one deceased), nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild on the way.
In honor of her birthday, the family commissioned local artist, Lindsey Simpson, 15, currently of Corryton, to paint a barn quilt for the barn that still stands on the family property. Lindsey represents the fifth generation of the family as one of Mrs. Henderson’s 11 great-grandchildren.
The first generation to live on the family property, Mel Henderson and wife Myrtle, had the family home built in August, 1909.
The barn was built within a few years of the house, so it is believed the barn might be around 100 years old. Other structures that existed on the property included a small one-room house, a drying shed, and two additional small two or three room houses.
On the family property today, in addition to the original house, the barn, and one of the original two or three room houses is Henderson’s Produce, owned and operated by third-generation farmer Marvin Henderson and his wife Norma; Eastgate Laundromat, building owned by Junior Henderson and his wife Wanda, leased to Eastgate Laundromat; and the recently constructed private residence of Velda Henderson Price.
In attendance at the installation of the barn quilt were sons, daughter and daughters-in-law, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren representing four generations of the Henderson family.
